Compounding FAQ’s
Not exactly sure what pharmacy compounding is, or what it can do for you? Check out the questions below to learn more.
What is compounding?
Pharmacy compounding is the art of preparing medications from scratch, using pure ingredients carefully combined by a pharmacist. It means we weigh out, measure, mix and prepare each medication in our pharmacy.
Compounding is all about problem-solving. Working within the problem-solving triad made up of Patient, Doctor and Pharmacist, we can come up with a patient-specific medication that meets your specific need or problem.
How can compounding help me?
No two people are exactly alike, so it makes sense that not all people should be taking the same exact medication. The most important reason for compounding is to tailor-make medications to fit your exact needs as an individual. You can think, of compounded medications as personalized medicines.
We can also help if you have any of the following medication problems: you have difficulty swallowing pills, your medication has been discontinued, your child refuses to take a certain flavor of medication, you’re allergic to an inactive ingredient in your medication like dyes or preservatives, or if you’re tired of hearing phrases like, “There’s nothing on the market for you." We can custom-make your medication to fit your needs!
Many formulations will never be commercially developed due to difficulty in obtaining patents and lack of market demand. Compounding allows for medical treatments that otherwise may not be possible. There are many special needs in health care, and compounding allows us to meet those needs, one patient at a time.
Do I need a prescription for a compound?
Any medicine that is only available by prescription still needs to have a prescription to be compounded. Today, many physicians are familiar with compounding and are happy to write or phone in a prescription for a compound.
How can I get a compounded prescription?
The easiest and fastest way to get a compounded prescription is to have us fax a note to your doctor with our recommendation of the compounded medication for you. When they approve it, we call you to let you know it is ready to be picked up or shipped to you. Just let us know if you would like us to do this for you.
Does it matter where I get my compounded medication?
Because quality is our primary ingredient, nothing is spared to ensure the highest level of compounding available. Your confidence is well placed in The Compounding Shoppe.
