Shingles

Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. Although shingles can occur anywhere on your body, it most often appears as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around either the left or the right side of your torso. It is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox.

After you've had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles. While it isn't a life-threatening condition, shingles can be very painful. 

Postherpetic Neuralgia

Postherpetic neuralgia is a complication of shingles where damage to the nerves causes pain following the outbreak of shingles. The symptoms of postherpetic neuralgia include a stinging, burning and/or sharp-shooting pain that can be severe enough to interfere with sleep and appetite. The pain can last for more than a month after the shingles rash and blisters have cleared up. The risk of postherpetic neuralgia increases with age, primarily affecting people older than 60.
